Understanding the Earth as a system requires measurements and research into the interconnectedness of all parts of the system. The parts of the Earth are the core, mantle, crust, surface soil, oceans and fresh liquid water, ice and at- mosphere. Their interrelationship is studied by physics, chemistry and biology, which deal with the earth as a system.
