Conflicts and Sustainable Development in South-South Geo-Political Zone of Nigeria

This study is on conflicts and sustainable development in South-South Geo-political zone, Nigeria. Its major objective is the examination of the extent to which the conflicts has affected the development of physical infrastructure, social infrastructure, societal values and economic infrastructure as well as dysfunctional socio-political infrastructure which are the various indices of sustainable development in the study. Ex-post facto research design was used in the study. The sampling techniques were the multistage techniques that resulted to the opinions of 1200 participants within the jurisdiction of the study. Conflicts and Sustainable Development was the name of the structured questionnaire that was used as the instrument. The study found a substantial correlation between conflicts and the growth of physical infra- structure in the South-South geopolitical zone, as well as a strong association between conflicts and social infrastruc- ture in the same region. It was also found in the study that there is a significant relationship between conflicts and the level of Societal Values in the Geo Political Zone; there was a significant relationship between conflicts and economic infrastructure in the South-South geo-political zone and significant relationship also exist between conflicts and dys- functional socio-political infrastructure in south-south geo-political zone. It was concluded that South-South Region of Nigeria has witness a lot of conflicts, and as a result of these conflicts, various activities that holds the key to sustainable development progress in the South-South geopolitical zone. This will assist in no small measure in reducing touts that mostly infiltrate conflicts.
