The oropharynx is that the middle compartment of the pharynx, i.e. throat; it's the region of the throat between the nasopharynx (top compartment) and hypopharynx (bottom compartment). The oropharynx includes the tonsils, tongue base, taste bud , and pharyngeal walls. Several of those subsites are quite common locations for the event of head and neck cancer, and a tumor present in any of those subsites are often broadly categorized as an oropharyngeal tumor. it's important to differentiate the oropharynx from the mouth (mouth), as tumors arising in these two sites may behave differently and need very different considerations regarding function and appropriate treatment.The mechanism of interaction between deafness , cognitive impairment, depression and isolation is being actively studied. Initial research suggests that treating deafness can have a positive effect on cognitive performance, especially memory. The tonsils (also mentioned as palatine tonsils) are collections of lymphatic tissue located on all sides of the oropharynx which participate within the immune function of the aerodigestive tract. Although tonsils could also be quite large during childhood, they typically regress with age, and lots of adults have little or no visible tonsillar tissue remaining. Enlargement or asymmetry of the tonsils in an adult may simply be an anatomic variant, but can also be a sign of tumor presence. Removal of tonsils has not been found to compromise immune status. the bottom of tongue (or tongue base) refers to the portion of the tongue which resides within the oropharynx (posterior 1/3 of the tongue). the bottom of tongue is functionally and anatomically distinct from the oral tongue, which is that the portion of the tongue which resides within the mouth (anterior 2/3 of the tongue) and is most vital for speech and language. The muscles of the bottom of tongue are more involved swallowing than speech, and play a critical role in controlling the passage of food and liquids from the mouth into the throat. Base of tongue dysfunction resulting from tumor, loss of tissue thanks to surgery, or radiation-related effects may end in difficulty swallowing or aspiration (spillage of liquids into the larynx or voicebox).
