Cardiovascular biomechanics focuses on model-based biomechanical analysis of the cardiovascular system, relevant for the pathophysiology, diagnosis, intervention and treatment of cardiovascular diseases. Research in fluid cardiovascular biomechanics includes the examination of blood vessel reactivity and the development of atherosclerosis to understand the development of lesions in animal models. Research in solid cardiovascular biomechanics includes the biomechanical study of abdominal aortic aneurysms and cerebral aneurysms to better understand the pathogenesis of the diseases. Application of cardiovascular biomechanics for functional diagnostic imaging (with MRI, Ultrasound and CT), surgical planning and intervention cardiology will become increasingly important in the clinical practice and biomedical industry.
