Golden Rice Quality Articles
Golden rice is rich in vitamin A. Rice kernals are deficient of vitamin A ,so people who obtain most of their calories from rice are deficient of vitamin A as rice does not contain it. German and Swiss researchers have engineered rice to produce beta carotene which is a precursor to vitamin a in the rice kernel, The beta carotene turns processed white rice to gold colour hence the name is given as golden rice. Hence people who consume golden rice can obtain vitamin A which contains beta carotene. Goldenrice is a genetically modified variety of rice rich in the orange or red plant pigment beta-carotene, a substance important in the human diet as a precursor of vitamin A. The intake of vitamin A provides humans with an important nutrient for vision, growth, reproduction, cellular differentiation and proliferation, and integrity of the immune system. Vitamin A deficiency can result in visual or ocular malfunctions such as night blindness and xerophthalmia and can reduce immune responsiveness which can result in an increased incidence or severity of respiratory infections, gastrointestinal infections, and measle. Vitamin A can be obtained from food, either as preformed vitamin A in animal products (eg, eggs and dairy products) or as provitamin A carotenoids, mainly β-carotene in plant products (eg, dark-green leafy vegetables and fruit).
