Geographic information systems (GIS) are fundamentally an applied science and albeit the GIS vendor society provides us with the hardware and software with more incipient, preponderant, and more expeditious technological implements, it is the domain specialists who apply these implements that define the state of the art. The encephalon of the GIS still lies in the field and district offices, engineering offices, logging divisions, and offices of minute GIS entrepreneurs all of whom apply this technology in their field of work. Albeit many GIS have been prosperously implemented, it is conspicuous that two-dimensional maps with very involute contours and color schema cannot precisely present multidimensional and dynamic spatial phenomena.
