Emergency management is the organization and management of the resources and responsibilities for dealing with all humanitarian aspects of emergencies. The aim is to reduce the harmful effects of all hazards, including disasters. Emergency managers think of disasters as recurring events with four phases: Mitigation, Preparedness, Response, and Recovery. The following diagram illustrates the relationship of the four phases of emergency management. The fundamental principles of emergency management is are based on four phases – mitigation, preparedness, response and recovery. The goal of disaster preparedness is to lessen the impact of disasters on vulnerable populations, to ready an organization for an influx of activity, and to design a coordinated plan that reduces the waste of resources, time, and efforts.  The Preparedness Cycle” is an important organizational tool that is comprised of five phases of: preparedness, prevention, response, recovery and mitigation.
