Dermatomyositis is an uncommon inflammatory disease marked by muscle weakness and a distinctive skin rash. The condition can affect adults and children. In adults, dermatomyositis usually occurs from the late 40s to early 60s. In children, it most often appears between 5 and 15 years of age. Dermatomyositis usually occurs in adults from the late 40s to early 60s, but can also occur in children. Females are most affected.

Symptoms include a dusky-red rash on the face and eyelids and in areas around the nails, knuckles, elbows, knees, chest and back. Muscle weakness is frequent.

Treatment includes medication or other therapies. In rare cases, surgery may be used to remove calcium deposits.
