A major goal of current research on alcohol is to understand the main points associated with the transition state from alcohol use to alcohol dependence. Positive reinforcement is the important factor in the early stages of alcohol use and abuse. Negative reinforcement can be important but in early in alcohol use by people self-medicating coexisting affective disorders, but its role is likely to increase following the transition to dependence.
