Biomedical Polymer
Biomedical polymers are essentially a biomaterial, that is used and adapted for a medical application. Biomedical polymer can have a beginning functional, such as being used for a heart valve and more interactive purpose such as hydroxyl apatite coated in implant and such implants are lunching upwards of twenty year. There are three main classes of biopolymers, classified according to the monomeric units used and the structure of the biopolymer formed: polynucleotide’s, polypeptides, and polysaccharides. More specifically, polynucleotide’s, such as RNA and DNA, are long polymers composed of 13 or more nucleotide monomers. It is important to understand that polymeric materials may include: raw materials, polymer compounds, foams, structural adhesives and composites, fillers, fibres, films, membranes, emulsions, coatings, rubbers, sealing materials, adhesive resins, solvents, inks and pigments.
