Anesthesia for Awake Craniotomies

In awake craniotomy, a patient need not be fully awake for the entirety of the procedure. The patient is more commonly given sedation/ anesthesia during application of the Mayfield Pins, skin incision, removal of the bone flap, and dura mater, which are more painful or surgically stimulating parts of the procedure.
